God is in Control? Not the Way You Think!

Updated: Jun 26, 2020

The concept and supposition we have heard numerous times that “God is in control” has baffled, plagued, and haunted people for many years. It is an ideology that seems to release mankind from any ultimate personal responsibility. It enables us to run and hide our heads in the sand to avoid facing problems and situations or having to make conscious decisions concerning the possible outcomes of life’s challenges. It falls within the framework of the teachings of St. Augustine of Hippo and John Calvin concerning predestination. Both embraced the idea that all events have been “willed” by God and we have to accept life as it comes. A concept that is disheartening and quite debilitating.

Their predestination construct that man is a mere pawn in an astrological chess game stems from Greek mythology where the gods made decisions for men and they acted out their twisted desires. If you accept their philosophies, you buy into Satan’s diabolical deceptions that are designed to take you out of the game of life and put you on the sidelines so you will not see yourself as a viable factor, an agent of change, a true contender for righteousness and the miraculous. But, if you boldly choose to believe otherwise, you should take note of Psalm 115:16, which makes an astonishing statement: “The heavens even the heavens belong to God, but the earth He has given to the sons of men!” You see, God the Father has provided the answer in that He gave mankind the authority; He afforded us the privilege of co-laboring with Him to bring about His will (Word) in the earth.

Made in His Image

If we can unwrap the tentacles of religion to free our minds, we may grasp the concept that this is a most astonishing relationship. Whether we know it or not, or whether or not we accept it, God remembers that He made man in His image and likeness, which means He expects man to create like Him. Hebrews 1:2 states that by God’s final Word, His Son, He created and framed the worlds. When we speak in conjunction with His will (Word), we exercise our God-given authority and ability to frame the outcomes of our world in accordance with His will.

I used to think that when man fell in the Garden of Eden, he lost all authority. Actually, the contrary is true. He still retained his authority, but lost his GPS (God Positioning System). Therefore, he immediately began to live and move in the wrong direction. Thankfully, before God made the world and put man in it, he built into the plan the ability to recalculate man’s route once he made the ultimate wrong turn. That new route is salvation—deliverance, protection, healing, prosperity, power and authority by faith in His Son, Jesus!

Authority on Earth

The Bible states in Matt. 28:18, Jesus has been given all power (authority) in heaven and on earth. If He has been given all power that means someone (Satan) has none. After Jesus received all power, He immediately delegated that power to every Believer. That delegated power is inherent in His command found in Matt. 28:18: “Go therefore….” Believers are to go in His name, that is, in His stead to do the work of the ministry, faithfully establishing His will on earth as it is in heaven.

In Luke 11:1, the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. One of the main things Jesus taught them was to say, “Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven.” Jesus taught them to pray in a manner that would help them and us, embrace the realities of heaven and establish them on earth. In other words, He meant that we should be in agreement that what is legal and constituted in Heaven is legal and must be constituted by us here in the earth.

Now here is the big question. If Jesus has been given all power and he delegated that power to us, how is it that Satan can wreak so much havoc in the earth? How does he get away with so much? He does it by usurping our authority, by deceiving and causing us to self-destruct. Through the avenues of media he uses our desires, lusts, fears, and ambitions against us to influence us to conform to the world’s system. By creating images in our mind contrary to God’s Word and kingdom, he is able to dissuade us from following the truth, which is God’s way. When we don’t make a conscious decision to renew our mind by the revelatory Word of God, we default into the conformity of this age. This brings about chaos, confusion, and destruction.

Who is in Control?

So, I ask again, who is in control? Do you still think it is God? In light of all that is wrong in the world today, do you really believe God is in control? The correct answer is that He is in control as much as we allow Him to be. Mind you, anything related to Jesus’ birth, life, death, resurrection, ascension, and reign is strictly by God’s sovereign design.

However, everything that happens in our daily life in the earth is subject to man’s choice of whether he adheres to the Word of God or follows Satan’s crafty deceit. I say man here instead of using a personal pronoun because an individual can make the right choices but remain in close proximity to someone who chooses to act a fool, thereby suffering the consequences of the other person’s evil choices. For instance, recently a woman drove to a gas station to fill her tank. When she got out to pump the gas, a man took her car. She was carjacked while her young child sat in the back seat. The woman had done nothing wrong. She was “minding her own business,” but a man, influenced by evil, decided to invade her space and peace.

Tragically, we see these types of situations occurring more frequently, especially those where a mentally unstable person threatens to commit suicide but kills someone before turning the gun on himself. Unfortunately innocent bystanders are caught up in that person’s negatively influenced, self-destructive behavior.

The Choice is Yours

As a Believer, I agree that some things have been and are set in stone as it were, such as when Christ came, was crucified, buried, resurrected, ascended, and His soon return. Also, you can’t change or alter the seasons, (Winter, Spring, Summer or Autumn) and such. But when it comes to man, God knows the outcome of every choice he will make, but in His sovereignty, God has chosen to leave the choice up to man. We are told that God is not willing that any should perish (even though many are), but for all to come to repentance. He even tells us the right choice to make, “Choose life!” (Deut. 30:19).

Suffice it to say, we have the responsibility to ourselves, God and the world to represent Him in the correct light and not to abrogate our authority. We have received great and precious promises from God. However, the power of promise (Covenant) is not self-executing. Instead, it is voice activated!

Believe, Speak & Change It

The classic verse, Mark 11:23 says, “Whosoever shall say to this mountain, be removed and be cast into the sea and shall not doubt in His heart, but believe that those things which he says shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he says.” It is important to note that this verse does not say if Christians shall say, nor if preachers or bishops shall say. It just says “whosoever” shall say. That means everyone has the innate ability within them, by the measure of faith God dealt to every man (Rom. 12:3), to shape, frame, or even create anew His own world. The problem is that man is using his ability in the wrong kingdom, which results in distortion. This ability has been designed to work correctly in the kingdom of His (God’s) dear Son (Col. 1:13) not in the kingdom of darkness.

Agree with God

So take your rightful place; exercise your authority to control the events of your life. Agree with God by saying what He says about your situation. Don’t accept anything less than total victory. Decide you’re going to overcome anything the enemy sends your way. God will back you up as you represent Him in the earth.
